Skiing and Snowboarding

Please Note – to make the very most of the vast Porte du Soleil area, ask one of our seasonnaires for their knowledge on where is best to ski/board given the conditions on the day; they should know their stuff!

Skiing

It is fair to say that most people associate the French Alps with skiing, and snowboarding of course – don’t worry boarders, your own section is below!

Morzine is the ultimate gateway to the Portes du Soleil, which really is any keen skiers paradise. Also given its enormous size, the well used phrase ‘there’s something for everyone’ genuinely applies to it!

Clearly to truly appreciate the area, we would recommend that you try it out –the below figures should be enough to convince you to jump for your boots…

  • 650km of piste, made up of 266 runs
  • 243km of cross country trails
  • 206 lifts connecting 12 resorts, 7 in France, 5 in Switzerland
  • Highest point at 2466m, lowest at 1000m

To make this the perfect combination of skiing and value, this whole area is available under one ski pass!

Whilst the incredible size of skiable area makes skiers salivate at the mere thought, the difficulty of navigating your way round and making the most of the pass springs to mind. Fortunately, there are 12 discovery routes placed around the Portes du Soleil which are well mapped out, give you a time estimation and are marked by a different alpine animal! They usually take two and a half hours and vary in difficulty - yet for the real challenge seekers, the Portes du Soleil circuit is for you! 80 km of piste in one day, skiing in two countries and you will not use the same lift twice! We recommend you get a good nights sleep before it – you will need it!

Snowboarding

What makes a snowboarder happy? What about 650km of piste and 243km of cross country trails? How about an area which offers very few cat tracks and no tough traverses? Oh, and then throw in numerous snow parks and boarder cross courses, along with a amazing chair lift network and I think you will be hard pushed to find many disgruntled faces!

Once again Morzine offers the perfect location to allow boarders to take full advantage of this snowy heaven, with its central position in the Portes du Soleil and very close proximity to Avoriaz, one of Europes top snowboard areas. It has 5 snowparks, catering for the complete beginners to freestyle to the absolute experts. There is also the Avoriaz Super pipe – a massive 120m long half pipe, which is regularly the host of many large events! The half pipe is only a short chairlift from the town, which is also close to another park called ‘The Stash’, which uses natural materials in the woods of Avoriaz to create a series of jumps and rails – as if off piste wasn’t enough fun already!

Of course, Avoriaz isn’t the only resort with the Parks, as there are another 4 to be found, located in Chatel, Les Gets, Morgins and Les Crosets! Keep your board waxed; it’s going to cover a lot of ‘snow’ during your stay!

Maybe another reason for boarders to keep their boards waxed are the 5 fantastic boarder cross courses dotted around the Portes du Soleil. These courses are serious fun, and of course take serious nerve, but that’s all part of it! And with the option to race up to 4 people at a time, get ready for your friends competitive sides to be exploited!

Ski Lessons

Skiing is a fantastic sport and it can be picked up very quickly – however in order to do so you will need to learn the basics first!

It is important that you get professional tuition when you start out, as proper technique is very important when skiing or snowboarding and the skills you learn will last with you for life. And of course your instructor will have the expert knowledge of where is suitable for beginners, so you won’t face the chance of going up that ski lift to the black runs…

We recommend 4 ski schools, please click on the links for details and prices.

When you are booking with any of them, please mention Morzine Ski Chalets to ensure a good deal!

  • BASS - 'British Alpine Ski and Snowboard School'.
  • Avoriaz Ski School – British run ski school based at the top of Prodain lift. Great for beginners & intermediates wanting to progress quickly.
  • Freedom2Ski – British run. Ideal for experienced/expert skiers looking for off-piste lessons & guiding or fine tuning their mogul or carving skiing.
  • ESF Morzine – French ski school perfect for kids and apprehensive beginners.

Moving Rapidly Away from the Slopes

Whilst skiing and snowboarding are the winter months main attraction, we appreciate that it may just not be for you! Or maybe you are a skier or snowboarder who has just had enough and want something a bit different! Whatever your reason though, the important thing is that Morzine and the Portes du Soleil offers a great choice. So give the below section a read – you never know, maybe your hunger for adrenaline can be filled elsewhere…

Glacier Walking

As it suggests, this is walking on glaciers! Of course, you will need your crampons to assist you up the ice! This is a fantastic way to see the breathtaking views you would see up the slopes, plus some more in the form of amazing crevasses, which most skiers and snowboarders will not see (hopefully!) There are a number of mountain guiding companies who can arrange treks for you and let you get the most out of this breathtaking activity. The chances are you will be more shattered than most skiers and boarders!

Ice Climbing

As if climbing isn’t restricted to the brave, the addition of this extreme element makes this sport more for the crazy! Here you will scale frozen waterfalls and glaciers, using ropes and ice picks, and generally having to work pretty hard to get the views at the top!

However, it is not restricted to the expert climber, as guides can teach absolute beginners from scratch, making this heart racing sport available to everyone who is mad enough to do it!

Ice Diving

Ah, the joy of diving into the frozen Montriond lake in the middle of the Alps. Quite clearly the thought of this puts most off, yet once over the initial jolt of cold it is well worth a try, as it is rather beautiful unique and certainly not many can say they have tried it! Why not try it after a late night and see if it wakes you up…

Ice Skating and the Morzine Pingouins

Ice skating is definitely an old favourite, as everyone can do it and is perfect for families. The rink is located at the Palais du Sport and open to the public on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays until 11pm – so if you didn’t work your leg muscles enough during the day then feel free to completely work them into overdrive with a session on the ice!

There is also the local ice hockey team who play in the National French league, the Morzine Pingouins, who play regular ice hockey matches at the Palais du Sport. If you have not been to an ice hockey match we urge you to go as they are fantastic to watch - just as long as you don’t mind a little bit of sporting violence!

Snowshoe Walking

This is something that anybody can do. All you need are a pair of light plastic snowshoes, which can be rented or bought from most sports shops, and a fairly strong pair of legs! That is it, you are ready to walk the deep snows of the Alps!

You can either take a map and set out on your own or go with one of the many companies who offer guided snowshoe tours. The tours are probably a better bet as you have the safety of a guide with expert knowledge, aswell as meeting likeminded people on your treks, making these quite social events!

Horse Drawn Sleigh Rides

What better a way to discover a rustic old town such as Morzine than by horse drawn sleigh! So whether it be a romantic trip or a magical winter adventure for your kids, these tours are available from the square by the tourist office and vary in distance and price. However you can also quite often stop them if they are free and use them as a rather unique alternative to a taxi!

Snowmobiles

Skiers and snowboarders may argue which is faster, though it is without doubt that neither are as fast as this for getting round the slopes!

You have the choice of riding solo or with a passenger on the back – either way you will get instruction and safety tuition before.  Once ready, you follow your guide for the excursion, which can be 30mins to an hour depending how long you choose. A lot of fun and something different; just don’t expect to be acting like John McClean in Diehard first time round!!

Hot Air Balloon Rides

We have listed plenty of ways to take in the views of Morzine and its surrounding resorts, but this has got to be the ultimate!

See as far as the eye can see from your basket and truly unwind as you float through the air.

Trips are arranged through Cameleon Productions, and don’t worry, they will bring you back to your starting point afterwards!

About the Town

There is no shortage of interesting shops around Morzine, which could allow you to pass a good day or two trooping around, whether you are buying in them or just happily looking about!

Whatever your taste or fancy, Morzine will probably offer up something to tempt you, with:

  • Numerous sports shops, all very fashionable!
  • Lots of luxurious boutiques
  • Perfumeries
  • Jewellers
  • Toy shops, selling beautiful hand crafted toys
  • Beautiful homeware shops
  • Hand made pottery, slate and wooden sculptures
  • Plenty of fine delis and boulangeries to tempt your taste buds!
  • Local Market every Wednesday morning, selling lots of local food produce, clothes and gifts. Well worth taking a morning off the slopes for!

That is only a very short list of what there is to offer – we recommend you have a bit of a look around, whether it be to make a day of it and treat yourself, or to relax after a days skiing, as all the shops in the town are open until 7pm!

Relaxation

Going to a ski resort doesn’t all have to be about high speed action and extreme heart racing exercise - there is a more relaxed side to life in Morzine!

And when we say relaxed, we mean it, as there are many Spas and Beauty Centres around the town offering the finest services and treatments, making sure you will leave fully rejuvenated and ready for anything!

However, you could really take the relaxation to the next level and use one of the number of mobile massage and beauty services which will come to your chalet or apartment and pamper you – after all, this is your time off…

These mobile services aren’t just for self indulgence though, as they also include qualified physiotherapists who can travel to your location and take away the days pains for you, leaving you ready for another slog on the slopes – so now there’s no excuse for a bit of a lie in in the mornings!

A Bit of Culture

Being an old rural market town, Morzine inhabitants used to live off agriculture and slate mining. This would explain the local cultural attractions – tours of the cheese making pastures and 200 year old slate works!

The Slate Workshop and Cowshed and Cheese Dairy are both very interesting and provide a good history of these industries, coupled of course with the amazing views!

However, for museums and galleries, one could take the short journey to Les Gets and discover the Museum of Mechanical Music (which includes interactive sessions where you can try some of the weird and wonderful musical devices for yourself!) or go further afield and take the 1 hour journey to Geneva, where there is more than you could begin to cover in a day!

Keeping the Kids Happy

Nanny Service

Maybe this section should have come under keeping the parents happy…!

Our nanny service is available for days and nights, meaning we can cover you just about anytime you may need!

Our nannies are NNB professionally qualified and can cater to your needs, whether you want them to be brought up the mountains to meet you for lunch, or for them to collect the kids from ski school.

If you feel you may like some ‘free time’ during your stay, please click here to see our prices and how to book this service.

Ski School

Ahh, the dread for many children - school during the holidays! Well they will soon realise that this is school with a difference!

Ski school is HIGHLY recommended if your children have not been skiing before, as they need to learn the basics and be taught by the professionals. They will also be in groups with other children, have fantastic fun and make lots of friends (aswell as probably not wanting to leave the slopes at the end of the day!) And of course, ski school allows adults to get a days skiing in at their own pace!

We recommend 4 ski schools:

  • BASS - 'British Alpine Ski and Snowboard School'.
  • Avoriaz Ski School – British run ski school based at the top of Prodain lift. Great for beginners & intermediates wanting to progress quickly.
  • Freedom2Ski – British run. Ideal for experienced/expert skiers looking for off-piste lessons & guiding or fine tuning their mogul or carving skiing.
  • ESF Morzine – French ski school perfect for kids and apprehensive beginners.

Activities Day and Night

Deciding on how to keep your little ones busy with lots of fun things to do can be difficult at the best of times, not least when you are abroad and don’t know the area well!

Fortunately Morzine provides plenty of activities for children, saving you from long evenings of potential boredom…

  • Horse Drawn Sleigh Rides

The horses troop around Morzine and surrounding areas, allowing you to see the beauty of the area, and of course provide a rather magical horse drawn carriage ride for children. Sleighs leave from the Tourist office and offer different routes for you to take.

  • Husky Rides

This really is something you can only do where there is snow! This is an activity that children (and adults) don’t forget quickly!

You can have an adult in the back and child in the sled and follow your guide, so you are in control of the dog, or you can have guides control your dog and you sit in the sled – the choice is yours!

  • Outdoor Ice Rink

Take the little ones to the ice and teach them to skate – or maybe let them teach you how to skate! Very good family fun and open:

  • Merry-Go-Round

The old antique Merry-go-Round will take the children on a magical journey and the adults on a journey back in time! Situated outside the tourist office it is a nice activity to do all year round!

  • French Toy Shops

There are two traditional toy shops in Morzine, the way they used to make them! They sell beautiful handcrafted toys, aswell as modern ones which may appeal to some! Perfect for a little visit, or even just to enjoy a bit of window shopping!

  • Giant Board Games

Organised by the Morzine Tourist Office, the giant board games are just one of the organised activities by the Tourist Office. It is best to call in and see what they are offering, as they offer a lot of events and can change from time to time.

  • Indiana Bob

Indiana Bob is actually the name for Bobsleighing – however this time, it is at night, and going through the wooded slopes above Morzine!

You are taken to the peak of the ‘Pleney’ by the Pleney cable car, where you are free to shoot down the empty slopes with the views of a light lit Morzine below you. Beautiful and scary at the same!

Straight Off the Slopes and Drinking Later...

There is nothing more rewarding than a cold beverage or two after a tough day on the slopes. You REALLY can say that you have deserved a drink and it’s also one of the few times that drinking at 5pm is totally acceptable!

There is no shortage of bars around Morzine, from the quiet and sophisticated to the loud, brash and very party friendly - they are all there!

The Dixie Bar has three bars all rolled into one, each with a different theme – there is Irish, Spanish and British. The Bars have large screens which show live sports, and with plenty of sports channels there is little chance you will miss any event you want to see, pool tables, live music from resident band the ‘Dixie Micks’ and internet access and is open from 12noon and will not close until 2am - so there is plenty of reason to stay!

The Tibetan Bar (formerly the Buddha Bar) has a relaxed atmosphere, cosy sofas and table service, which is brilliant for knackered legs! It opens for the Après Ski rush and will stay open until 2am – how very nice!

For a slightly wilder time you can always try the English run Cavern Bar. This bar claims its customers will be the happiest I town with beers for €1.50 – they may not be wrong either! Open from 4pm until 2am every day of the week, they are primed for the Après Ski rush, given their two happy hours from 4pm-5pm and 10pm-11pm! They also have numerous themed nights, especially on a Tuesday – so coupled with their vast ‘Shooters’ menu, you could be in for a wild night!

Another cheap and cheerful night may be had in the Coyote Bar, which used to be an old bowling alley! Today, it provides beer, pool and dancing – not bad we think!

For something a bit different try The Jolly Good Bar (Sherpa Bar) which is another lively English bar – but each year towards the end of the ski season when the weather is getting better, they host a bbq where you bring the meat and they provide all bread and sides, and even cook your food, with no charge! Definitely worth doing if you are there, but do check out the bar anyway, especially on Wednesdays for a bit of a party!

Finally, for the home of the Mutzig beer (which one must try, but in small doses due to strength…) head to Bar Robinsons. They only serve the one beer – Mutzig! But simplicity is good, a theory which may have helped to influence the bars no music policy, so all you will hear are the sounds of glorious stories from the day! Open throughout the day, but last orders are at 7.30, so get there fast!

Drinking a bit more…

Well, obviously you didn’t ski hard enough during the day that 2am just isn’t late enough for you – or maybe you just have infinite energy!

Either way, there are 2 nightclubs in Morzine, L’Opera and Le Paradis, which are both open until 5am. However, as with many places staying open late, they charge a slightly higher price for drinks, so be warned!!
